Lomar in talks with Chinese yards for up to 10 feederships

Lomar Shipping is looking to further expand its fleet with newbuildings.

Industry sources say the UK-based company is planning to order up to 10 feeder boxships of 1,900 teu and is in talks with three Chinese yards — Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, Shanghai Shipyard and Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard.

Industry experts are not surprised by Lomar’s appetite for newbuildings given the current market. “It is very tempting for shipping companies to order newbuildings now, as [the] price is so low,” said one. “Chinese yards also have the capacity to deliver vessels by the end of next year.”
