How to cure an addiction

What do you do when an individual’s, or an industry’s, behaviour is so patently destructive that it threatens its health, and perhaps very existence?

Were we talking about a desperate youngster hooked on illegal substances, his or her loved ones would no doubt stage an ‘intervention’, perhaps drag him or her to a medical clinic to ‘dry out’ and release them from the addiction that has taken such a hold over their lives.

Analysts at Drewry attempted their own intervention on the container industry last week, pointing to its addiction to ‘toxic’ behaviours that will hit liner profitability. The symptoms are well-known: rampant overcapacity coupled with weak demand and aggressive pricing, mean that “some lines will be back in the red by the end of 2015”, Drewry said.
