Chiquita swoops on Conti Reederei pair
Chiquita Brands International has purchased a pair of Conti Reederei vessels to beef up and modernize its fleet of reefer containerships. The US fruit company has acquired the 2,127-teu Conto Arabella and Conti Salome (both built 2007), according to Alphaliner. The vessels have been renamed Chiquita Progress and Chiquita Venture and will be operated by Chiquita’s Great White Fleet shipping arm, the industry researcher said. Alphaliner says both vessels are fitted with 400 reefer plugs each for 40 ft containers, a capacity that might be increased for Chiquita’s fruit trades.
